Reducing waste in good taste

Stemming the tide of single-use plastics
Every year, U.S. consumers dispose of 900 million plastic detergent bottles. Grove and Alquemy set out to develop a holistic approach, which couples plant-based detergents with an elevated reusable glass dispenser.
The result is a sustainable, and uniquely beautiful solution that will help to stem the tide of single use plastic waste.

Elevate everyday
In a category overflowing with large, often garish throw-away plastic products, we understood that for a more sustainable solution to be adopted, it would need to connect with consumers on a deeper emotional level.
We reimagined the laundry bottle as a design object – shifting the consumer mindset from disposable to desirable, from afterthought to artful essential.

Daily dose
Using the right amount of detergent is good for your clothes, your washing machine, and your budget. Our patented controlled-pour mechanism ensures you get the perfect amount every time – just tip, and it stops automatically. After countless prototypes testing flow and durability, we created a design that’s accurate, effortless, and eliminates the need to measure (or overpour) again.
Winning formula
The Grove Collaborative Refillable Glass Detergent Vessel was awarded a prestigious Australian Good Design Award in the Housewares and Objects category.

“A thoughtfully designed product that ensures proper detergent dosing and minimizes overuse. Incorporating a reusable mechanism to limit detergent amounts is an excellent idea, and the standardized dosing effectively helps reduce waste.”
Embracing sustainability
This laundry bottle was created as part of a broader brand language strategy for Grove Collaborative. Our approach centered on crafting a refined design language that incorporated premium materials and an assortment inspired by interior design, enabling consumers to adopt a more sustainable cleaning routine at home without compromising on aesthetics.
Our aim was to make the cleaner choice the better-looking one, too.
Getting a handle on the problem
Great design emerges from a process of observation, testing, and continuous refinement. During our initial internal testing, we simulated real-world conditions to assess the usability of our detergent bottle. It was through these hands-on trials that we identified the need for a handle to improve grip in wet, slippery environments.
So, we added one. Simple. Thoughtful. Functional. That’s how good design solves real problems without overcomplicating the solution.

Domestic beauty
We believe design should make life easier – and more beautiful. Every curve, mechanism, and material in this project was chosen to elevate routine into ritual.
Because when your tools are this considered, sustainability doesn’t feel like a chore. It just feels right.
